I spent so long trying to finish the Winter Birds of North Berkeley Field Guide (find it here: http://www.localbiology.org/node/412), that I worried the migrants would all have moved on by the time it was done.
It is raining in Los Angeles. It is also La Nina this year.

January 27, 2009, at 2:30pm, I spotted my second Monarch Butterfly. It was flying around some kind of pine tree. That's the second one this week. I hope this means we'll be seeing more of them this spring.
My mother told me that when she was a girl, there would be swarms of Monarch's...and then one season they just left.
I hope they return!
Today was a great day with the inauguration and the end of Bush. Obama talked about the work that needs to happen. This is really exciting and I'll take a moment here to put some ideas out about what this means for Local Biology.
When we were starting this group, and I was thinking about the meaning of LB, I searched really far into my heart to try to come out with a direction for me and my generation -- regarding the outdoors. There isn't really a good situation for making natural experiences sharable in web format in the way we are coming to expect.
I planted lettuce about a month ago. From seed!
I made little rows in a long, narrow windowbox container. I tamped the seed in and carefully covered it with just a little bit of dirt. I watered it and made sure that it got lots of sun. And my diligence was rewarded with tiny little lettuce sprouts! Very exciting.
But, of course, tragedy struck, like it must. Last weekend I went outside to check my lettuce, like I do every morning, only to discover that it had all been nibbled down to the ground!
My advisor just forwarded me an announcement for an event tomorrow evening....
