LEARN ABOUT CREATURES

(IN OUR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS)

this project is called LOCAL BIOLOGY (until we think of something better)

Bugs at Night

Bugs at Night

This activity is for night-time, and especially summer nights.

Level 1 means that this activity is
* good for people who are just starting out noticing their world.
* good for all ages and all levels of experience
* good to do over and over again

Materials

  • White Sheet
  • UV light (black light?) (does anyone know what's better?)
  • Camera with flash (digital cameras seems to take better night pictures)
  1. Get a white sheet and hang it outside.
  2. Put the light near the white sheet (exactly where, I'm not sure)
  3. Wait a while - an hour or so
  4. Go outside and look to see if any bugs are hanging out on the sheet.

Here are some more things you can do with these nighttime insects.

  • Take pictures of the insects that hang out on the white sheet.
  • Upload those pictures. If you upload it to Flickr, we will be able to help you link those pictures to the report that you can make about how this assignment went.
  • Make a report (coming Fall 2008, for now, post it on your blog and mail us the link)
  • If there's an insect that you are curious about, send us the picture. Some local biologist/itinerant naturalists will be learning about insects, and they will be tasked with helping you figure out what the insect is.
