OK technically, I lived in 'West Berkeley' but this is only a mile from where you live now, Jeanne-Marie. I lived near University and San Pablo - and there were always, always House Finches sitting on the power lines. I did not often see Goldfinches, but then again, I'm not very clear about the differences between the lesser goldfinches and the regular ones.
Where I lived it was pretty flat - but it seems like the liveliness of the neighborhood changes north of the Bart station -- everyone's gardens are more lush, and there seems to be more bushy trees? Not sure why though. Don't know if it's because it's further away from University?
