LEARN ABOUT CREATURES

(IN OUR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS)

this project is called LOCAL BIOLOGY (until we think of something better)

How precise is too precise?

It is possibly to geo-tag information about the natural world to a pretty precise degree. All you have to do is figure out where a geological feature is using google, and figure out the exact latitude and longitude.

Here's an example. I went on a great plant walk to a nature conservancy site. It was very possible for me to pick out a special sand dune, near which were certain edible mushrooms. So it would be possible, while discussing sustainable food and other things to tell people exactly where and when food reserves are available. This would put these plants that are under a conserved status at possible risk.

Similarly, if you were to identify exactly where in the city of Minneapolis an eagle's nestlings were roosting, it puts those baby eagles at more risk of disturbance.

So what do we do. In order to really learn about wildlife and being responsible citizens, it is important to become aware that yes, real live species live under your nose. And if you are of the good fortune to go on a guided walk in a nature preserve, it makes sense to post blogs and photos in great detail.

So it is possible that this could create tourist traffic in places and situation that are not suited for much traffic.

Neighborhood identity

Also, if you are a Local Biology poster, you have the option of saying where you live. Most of us really don't want this information on the internet. Yet we would like to talk about what's going on with creatures in our neighborhoods. One option that is available is to round or mis-identify your location. Or to put your location as a landmark which is obviously not your house.

How should we proceed?
